shot description & editing

Film & TV

Establishing shot: Setting- An establishing shot is used to show the location or place where our story will be set

Long shot: from a greater distance, showing the full scene or a character location in the scene

Medium shot: The camera is a medium distance from the character. Waist up! most action or dialogue is show using a medium shot.

Pan : the camera moves from left to right or vice versa. also used to convey motion

Tilt: camera moves up & down. used to convey scale or height

Zoom: A stationary camera is used but the lens will be zoomed in or out. Makes the subject appear to move closer or futher away from the camera. Zooming is often used to precede a revealing moment.

Dolly: Camera is mounted on a track or to a vehicle

Boom: The camera is mounted to a crane to give us overhead shots

Editing
--------
180deg rule: when setting a scene imagine a 180deg line that the camera will never cross

Insert: inserts are used to break up the action & will be different to the main shot. usually in the form of a close up, head shot, feet shot etc

Over the shoulder shot: If 2 people are talking the camera can be positioned behind the shoulder of someone who is talking, catching their shoulder in the shot as well as the reaction of the other person

Cutaway: a cutaway shot will interrupt the main shot showing something else, usually it is followed by a return to the main shot
